Celebrate with Frikadellen

Frikadellen. Freakawho? I asked, moments before being blown into some previously unattained level of taste-consciousness by what I had naïvely assumed was just another burger.

Frikadellen. Meaty, juicy, and rich, this traditional German patty is comprised of equal parts ground pork and ground beef, melted onion, spices (marjoram, I’m told, is key) and a day-old roll softened in water or milk. For your first experience or simply the most recent of many, Schaller & Weber’s store on 86th and 2nd is the ideal place to go for some handmade frikadellen.

Frikadellen are traditionally served alongside potatoes and a green salad, but we’ll look the other way if you want to stick it in a bun, add a sliced tomato, a leaf of Bibb lettuce and some mustard, and call it Labor Day. After all, if that’s allegedly how the hamburger was born in the first place, then what better weekend is there to celebrate a little American history?
